What is group counseling?

Group counseling is a form of therapy that typically involves 4-10 clients and an experienced group therapist.

Counseling offers mental, emotional, and spiritual support for people struggling with grief, traumatic experiences, or grief that is itself traumatic, as well as other issues.

When do people benefit from group counseling?

Grief is complicated and affects each person differently. Some signs that it’s time to consider getting support through individual or group counseling include:

Experiencing a loss

Grief can be a response to any loss and may leave you needing support. The best known example of grief is losing a loved one, but many other types of loss include divorce, retirement, losing a job, disconnecting from toxic relationships, and becoming disabled to name a few

Feeling like you can’t move on

Feeling like you can’t let go of the past signifies that you might need help with grief. Your grief may keep you from returning to normal activities, or you might feel like there’s nothing to look forward to.

Blocking out your feelings

If you’re avoiding thoughts or reminders of what you’ve lost, frequently going out of your way to not let yourself process the grief, is just as unhealthy as dwelling on it excessively.

Can group counseling help with trauma?

Group counseling has been a widely accepted treatment option for over 50 years and is highly beneficial in treating trauma.

A few of the signs that you need help processing and getting past your trauma include:

  • Relationship problems
  • Difficulty managing your moods
  • Self-isolation
  • Feelings of deep hostility
  • Always feeling threatened
  • Inability to control strong reactions
  • Impulsive and self-destructive behaviors

Trauma, like grief, can be complex. In both situations, it’s important to be kind to yourself and give yourself opportunities to heal.
